SAG Vehicle driver DUTIES

1. The SAG (Support And Gear) vehicle driver will be listed on the club website for each scheduled club ride that is determined to be of sufficient distance as to need a SAG vehicle.

2. SAG Drivers will be scheduled ahead of time for a pre-determined date / ride.

3. The SAG Driver must either provide a suitable SAG vehicle or arrange for a vehicle prior to the scheduled ride.

4.
The SAG driver must coordinate ahead of time with the Ride Leader about the availability of a drinks cooler, ice and snacks for the ride. NOTE: The SAG driver does not have to purchase all of these items as other club members may have the supplies which are needed. But, the SAG Driver should coordinate the availability of the items.

5. Other items which are required in the SAG vehicle include: a suitable bicycle pump and a first aid kit.

6. The SAG driver must show-up at a scheduled ride at least 15 minutes prior to the start time.

7. The SAG Driver will coordinate with the Ride Leader prior to the start of the ride to plan the route of travel and the scheduled rest stops en route. The SAG Driver will follow the Ride Leader’s instructions.

8. The SAG Driver must have cellular phone communication.

9. The SAG Driver should take a head count of the riders participating in the ride. Throughout the ride the SAG Driver should try to account for all riders at major intersections and meeting points / rest stops. Notify the Ride Leader of any discrepancies.

10. When driving along the route the SAG Driver should “jump” ahead of the riders and stop at major intersections and pre-arranged meeting points / rest stops. When approaching a group of cyclists from the rear the SAG Driver should give three short taps of the horn as a warning. This same audible signal can be used to signify that there is a “Car Back”

11. When stopping along the ride route the SAG Driver will ensure he/she only stops along the roadside in safe locations. Avoid stopping in the roadway, causing any potential traffic hazards. Instead, try an pull-off into rest areas, or business locations.

12. When stopping at pre-arranged points, the SAG Driver should assist riders in obtaining drinks and ice, etc.

13. If there are any rider emergencies along the route the SAG Driver will assist as best as possible and immediately notify the Ride Leader of the situation.

14. Nearing the end of the ride, the SAG Driver should remain near behind the last rider to ensure he / she makes it back to the meeting location / end of ride. This prevents having to go back along the route to conduct a sweep for missing riders.

15. Along with the Ride Leader, the SAG Driver will not leave the ride start / finish location until all riders have returned / are accounted for.
